Man vs Food Grill, Heaton

imageimageThe popularity of BBQ food shows no signs of abating. TV programmes like Man V Food and BBQ Champ (both fronted by Adam Richman) demonstrates the nation’s love for fire and meat. Newcastle has recently witnessed a surge of BBQ joints opening across the city in recent times, with Longhorns and Hop & Cleaver leading the pack. Another name has added itself to the roster by opening another branch today – Man vs Food Grill.

Those who are frequent readers of the blog will be familiar with the name as the South Shields branch has twice graced the Canny Food pages since opening back in March of last year (see posts here and here). Today the owners opened a site on Chillingham Road, which already features some fabulous places to eat like Baobab Bakery. When we received an invite to their launch party we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to look round, or for Jnr to sample more of their Cheesecake. Being veterans of the MvG experience we wanted to see if there were any changes to their tried and tested formula.

image imageimageThe menu is identical between the two establishments and the interiors are similar too. We always find it difficult to choose when faced with such an extensive list of food. Wanting to try something different to our previous visits we chose a BBQ Sharing Tray, which features nachos, brisket, ribs, pulled chicken and other assorted marinated meat bits and pieces. This is £24.95, and comes with a choice of 2 sides. Jnr opted for their American Dog, which also came with 2 sides. We always like the Sweet Potato Fries, and I decided to give their Mozzarella Sticks (which were great, btw) a whirl. The food covered the table and, yet again, we were bested by it. We were offered a doggy bag to take home, which means both the boys will be fed tomorrow. Although the tray was for 2 people, I think even 3 people would struggle to eat it for a main course. We need to remember this next time we visit, and I don’t know how on earth anyone could manage the Food Challenges!

imageimageMr. Canny took the opportunity to try their cocktails and ordered a Frosty Russian. Jnr typically chose an Oreo Milkshake, and while it doesn’t match the lofty standards of the recently blogged about Geet Big Shakes, it’s a deliciously thick and creamy affair. These are something we always order as we think they’re some of the best we’ve tried outside the US.

imageOur only disappointment came from the fact there were no desserts on offer during the launch event. The display cabinets were empty, but we were informed they’d be stocked ahead of their opening tomorrow. We already know from experience we’re be big fans though! There were no complaints from any of us in terms of our experience. The food is great, we find the staff friendly and helpful, and it’s good value got money. We highly recommend Man vs Food Grill. and would like to thank them for their hospitality.

Thanks for reading,

Pip x

This shakes look amazing but I have an issue with man v food challenges, was asked to try it at a fabulous restaurant in Manchester once, the food was delicious but the gluttony made me feel so guilty!
