Having heard about Fire & Ice Durham – a free two day happening in the city centre on the 24th and 25th of February – on Facebook, I was interested to take along the family to have a look round the interactive sculptures. My mother-in-law is currently visiting from Brazil and loves this area of the region, so it gave us the perfect excuse to make a day trip out of the event. From 10am something was scheduled to keep the family entertained, culminating in a special display at the end of the day. Loving Lumiere, we knew it was going to be a treat for the eyes.
You could take part in free Ice Sculpting in the Market Place between 1 – 5pm or wander round the Mythical Ice Trail at leisure. Here you will see ice trolls, dragons and other fabled chararcters reimagined in ice form. The idea of Fire and Ice Durham is to be an interactive event for the whole family to be involved in, which we certainly tried ourselves! If you are huge Game of Thrones fan you may also be keen to see work on display by the team behind some you have already seen on the TV show. It took us around an hour to walk round the sculptures.
There was a child friendly Fire & Ice Performance in the Market Square lasting approximately 10 minutes at 5:15pm approximately. There is slightly longer performance scheduled for 6pm, which was touted as being better suited for older children and adults. Some younger children might find the loud music and effects too much. We thought the MIL might enjoy this a little more 🙂
We thought we’d share some of our photos from the visit with you. I hope you enjoy this sneaky peek. You can find out more about the event here.
