You can probably tell we like doughnuts by the sheer volume of posts on this blog dedicated to them! While in Edinburgh recently we made a trip to Considerit, a wholly vegan chocolate and doughnut cafe in the Sciennes area of the city. We had met the team at various vegan festivals in the North East over the years so it was great to see the business had proved so successful they were able to establish a permanent physical presence.
I was taken aback by the fact they don’t scream they’re a plant based business. Having heard so many people say that customers react negatively to the vegan tag I can understand why Considerit have perhaps avoided it. While it isn’t always easy to tell who is vegan by first glance, there was a steady stream of folk popping in for sweet treats while we were there and it would be interesting to know what the breakdown of custom is. I can’t imagine they were all vegan, and I hope that many were visiting on account of how good their food is regardless.
So, onto the actual doughnuts. We arrived just on opening while the display cabinet of delectable delights was being filled. They are prepared fresh each day and we managed to try them while they were still warm. It was hard to choose from the selection and we wanted one of each! Some of the flavours on offer included: Biscoff, Oreo, Cinnamon Sugar, Chocolate Hazelnut, Raspberry & White Chocolate, Jam and White Chocolate & Honeycomb.
We ordered a pot of tea each and started with the classics. The crumbled Biscoff and Oreo crumb doughnuts were glazed before adding the topping and were light and moist. They weren’t too sickly either, which meant we decided to order another round. Well, as we had tea left it seemed rude not to!
Seconds was the White Chocolate topped with pieces of Honeycomb and the Chocolate Hazelnut varieties. It was hard to choose and favourite as they were all so good. Pricing was also reasonable considering the quality (£2.60 to eat in, £2.20 to take away) and it was nice to be able to enjoy our breakfast in a leisurely fashion in the small seating area Considerit have.
We’re very jealous Edinburgh has something like this and decided to bring a box of doughnuts home with us. We also tried out some of their chocolate – the vegan Creme Eggs they do are INCREDIBLE – and were very impressed with everything we had. If you’re in the city a trip to Considerit is a must. It is up there with Brammibals in Berlin for vegan doughnuts, and that is some high praise indeed.
