Violife, the non-dairy cheese producer from Greece, have branched out into mock meats! That’s right, Tofurky have a challenger on the vegan sandwich filling front. Having already made a name for themselves producing a wide variety of vegan cheeses, Violife last week released Chicken Flavour Slices onto the UK market. Initially being sold in a limited number of retailers, I was interested to know how ‘meaty’ this substitute was going to be. I have to admit, I’ve not been too fond of meat slice sarnies since I became vegan but a certain little girl quite likes Tofurky when she’s at nursery. I know lots of vegans don’t want to be reminded of animal products, whereas others can’t get enough of them. It will be interesting to see what the response is like.
Once I heard Alternative Stores had Violife’s Chicken Flavour Slices in stock I popped down to pick up a few packets. It initially reminded me of the processed chicken roll you see on deli counters in supermarkets. It smells smoky when you first open up the packaging and the feeling of the slice is very similar to that of a cheese slice.
Taste-wise, it is also smoky. I wouldn’t say it reminds me of chicken per se, especially as the texture is reminiscent of their cheese slices. I personally feel Tofurky have a more realistic meat texture than this new Violife product does.
It works better in sandwiches than eating as is, which was a bit of a relief. The flavour is delicate, and those worried about something being offensively meaty I think will find these slices almost inoffensive in heir sandwiches. I wouldn’t be able to use it in the same way as I use Tofurky Ham Slices, for example, as it melts when heated. This will be a disappointment for people who, like me, make toasties and grilled panini with substitute products. Based on the name, I think Violife were intending to emulate the flavour of chicken rather than the texture, so those who are wanting something with a meaty feel may have their hopes dashed trying these.
I think the Chicken Flavour Slices will prove to be a popular product for Violife, especially if they are released in supermarkets alongside their dairy free cheese range. Having a variety of different products to use certainly makes being vegan easier. Veganism is more mainstream than ever before and it’s great to have a choice available for those who are transitioning or who don’t necessarily follow a whole food diet.
