Great news! Sainsbury’s are now stocking vegan Cornettos 🙂 On sale since February, I managed to pick some up at my local store this week. I have a theory that we’re often behind the times up here in the North and receive new product lines way after our Southern counterparts, although the fact I was able to review Goodfella’s vegan pizza ahead of its official launch date perhaps disproves my conspiracy theory!
Launched to meet the growing demand for vegan products, the ice cream cones are also suitable for those who are gluten free. Made from soya and topped like the original Cornettos with chopped nuts and chocolate, each box contains 4 individually wrapped cones. Readers may remember that Tesco also have a selection of dairy and gluten free cones on sale too, as posted about last summer. They are available in toffee and strawberry flavours and retail for £2.25, while Walls sell theirs for £2.50. Not a huge difference in price, but is it worth paying extra for a ‘big brand’?
There will be some vegans who will avoid buying these frozen desserts as the parent company of Walls is Unilever, a company known for testing on animals. I will leave the ethical debate there as I feel this is a personal choice.
Just like the dairy version, the ice cream is smooth and creamy. You’ll also find the lovely lump of chocolate in the point of the cone, which is my favourite part of the experience. I personally prefer Walls to the Tesco version as I feel they are a higher quality, but others may think differently. The cones are certainly a lot crisper with this brand than the supermarket’s. It will be interesting to see whether other flavours are launched if this proves successful in the UK.
