There seemed to be a lot of hubub last year regarding the status of Camber Coffee, a lovely little cafe situated above Start Fitness in Newcastle. This related to the fact the once solely vegetarian/vegan establishment had started to serve meat, or was at least considering adding more animal products to the menu. This meant many in the vegan community decided they were going to avoid Camber in the future as it seemed like a back pedal (pun intended) from the owners.

We’re pleased to report, however, this doesn’t seem to be the case today. Proudly displayed on the walls is its raison d’etre, leaving no doubt that the veggie agenda is very much back on the agenda.

We visited for a leisurely brunch with the smallest member of the family on a Sunday morning and was suitably impressed. Homemade beans, veggie sausages, Scrambled Tofu and a generous serving of avocado meant that this vegan breakfast was suitably filling. We can’t remember the exact price but think it was around the £6 mark.

Camber also have a selection of SFV baked treats, which means those looking for a place to stop for a dairy free latte whilst out shopping can also indulge their sweet tooth. Dinky wasn’t that keen on the cake, but don’t let that deter you. She can be a fusspot at the best of times.
At a time where every high street chain is riding the vegan ‘gravy train’, it’s good to be able to support local businesses that are embracing an ethical philosophy towards food and the environment. I hope this is something which remains the case for Camber in the long term.

You can read our previous review of Camber Coffee after it opened here as it also features photos from its interior. You’ll also get a reminder of how cute Dinky is 🙂
These photos look mouth-watering! I completely agree with you that it’s so important to be supporting the local at the moment, particularly with coffee-shops, as the huge chains are booming. And you often find that the independents have a lot more character and are able to focus more on ethical values. Thanks for sharing!
