Sunderland’s first ever Restaurant Week is scheduled to run from the 24th September (Saturday) until Sunday the 2nd of October.
Eat Drink Sunderland Restaurant Week provides the perfect platform for the area’s cafes and restaurants to raise the profile of their business. Many are independently owned, and the idea is to attract a greater volume of customers during the week with special offers. With different cuisines on offer, it will be difficult to pick just one to visit! We’ve decided to give you a tour of the globe with our Canny Food picks for each night of Restaurant Week, including many eateries that have already graced the pages of the blog.
Saturday 24th – Arabesque
Arabesque offers diners a taste of Egypt, with two courses available for just £11.95 during Restaurant Week. With many dishes vegetarian and vegan-friendly, it is one that’s high on our to-visit list.
Sunday 25th – Karbon Grill
You can read more about our visit to Karbon Grill when it opened earlier in the year here. During the week they will be offering 2 courses for £10, or 3 for £15. With French Trimmed Pork Chops and Chocolate Brownies served with Snickers Ice Cream on offer, this is bound to be a popular choice for diners. Pre-booking is recommended.
Monday 26th – Asiana Fusion
Asiana serves up a taste of the Far East in its modern dining room. Offering 3 courses for £15, it’s a good idea to wear comfortable clothing when dining here. Dishes on the special menu include Salt & Chilli Ribs, Thai Green Curry and Banana Fritters, you certainly won’t leave feeling hungry afterwards!
Tuesday 27th – The Funky Indian
The Funky Indian are offering 3 courses for £15 during Restaurant Week. This will be available Tuesday to Friday and Sunday evening only. Try out the crispy Cauliflower Florets! The menu has thoughtfully marked out vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, which makes dining out with a dietary requirement so much easier.
Wednesday 28th – D’Acqua
It has been a while since we’ve dined at D’Acqua, touted as one of the best restaurants in Sunderland. You can read about our experience here.
I’m keen to return after reading the special Restaurant Week menu, which includes a deconstructed Cauliflower Cheese, Sea Bass and Affagato for dessert for £15.
Thursday 29th – Angelos
A finalist of this year’s English Italian Awards Chef of the Year having won this accolade last year, Angelos are another top pick for Restaurant Week for us. Two courses are on offer for £15, and include the Italian classic Calamari Fritti and Strozzapreti.
Friday 30th – No 2 Church Lane
Having visited newly opened Church Lane ahead of National Burger Day (read more here), we’d highly recommend a meal here during Restaurant Week. With loads to choose from, especially for vegetarians and vegans, the bar is bound to be busy. Their offer is a burger, side and sauce for £10. For an extra £5 you can add a drink to the deal. Pictured below is their Seitan burger, which is topped with jackfruit.
Saturday 1st October – Junipers Pantry
We sampled what David Gill, Juniper’s owner, had to offer at their former home in Barnes. You can read about our impressions of the food and standard of cooking on offer here.
Now ensconced in the Cavalier pub, Restaurant Week sees traditional dishes like Bubble & Squeak and Chicken Breast jazzed up by the team. Available Monday to Saturday between 12 and 9pm, three courses are £15. Vegetarian options are available.
Sunday 2nd October – Elephant Tea Rooms
For just £5 you can sample an assortment of Danish Pastries with a pot of Elephant’s House Blend Teas. They have 26 different types to chose from, which should accommodate all tastes and fancies. If tea isn’t your thing, it can be substituted with one of their coffees instead.
