One of the things we hope to achieve with Canny Food is showing how easy it is to eat vegan in the North East. For those who are new to veganism or who are interested in giving plant-based food a whirl, we’ve created a round-up of some of our favourite places to eat in the Toon to inspire you.
Vegano, Newcastle Quayside Market
Occupying a pitch near the Guildhall on the Quayside, Vegano are now regulars during the Sunday Market. Pop by for a No Bull Burger or fantastic meat-free Hot Dog while browsing round the independent stalls on the banks for the Tyne. Follow them on Instagram for tasty food pics and news on which markets they’ll be attending.
Grumpy Panda, Gateshead
Having opened a mere six months ago, Gateshead’s first vegan restaurant has been winning praise for their homemade burgers and dairy free cheeses. We’re huge fans and visit on an almost weekly basis to try and work our way through the menu and specials on offer. Find out more here.
Junk It Up, Byker
Junk It Up in Byker may be a newbie on the vegan scene in Newcastle, but it already has a loyal following. During Vegan Restaurant Week its ‘Vegan Munch Box’ (pictured above) was so popular it became a regular menu item. Read our review of their Southern Fried Fricken here.
Ury, Newcastle Quayside
One of our favourite places to enjoy Indian food, Ury have a great selection of dishes that are suitable for vegans or can be veganised. My particular favourite is the Vazhuthanangha Curry.
Zapatista, Grainger Street
Newcastle’s first and best burrito bar was another popular participant during Vegan Restaurant Week, and Zapatista have vegan burrito and fajita options available all of the time. See their website for more information on the menu options available to those who are meat and dairy free here.
The Bohemian, Newcastle
Offering one of the best vegan afternoon teas around, as well as a decent selection of pizzas and tapas dishes, The Bohemian have recently announced they are now a fully vegan restaurant. Got a special occasion coming up? Get booking!
The Ship Inn, Ouseburn
Newcastle’s first vegan pub, The Ship has a fantastic plant based menu which doesn’t rely on meat substitutes. Their Sunday Lunch menu is one of our favourites and you can read a review here.
Harissa Kitchen, Sandyford
Offering fantastic meat-free breakfasts starring incredible vegan sausages made with mushrooms from Hooba, Harissa Kitchen is a must-visit for those wanting a leisurely brunch in the area. See our review here.
Super Natural, Grainger Street
One of the longest standing vegetarian cafes in Newcastle, Super Natural has a great menu with plenty of lunch options and vegan cakes. They even have a full breakfast for those needing fuelling before hitting work or indulging in some retail therapy.
The Herb Garden, Newcastle
With a £5 lunch deal which includes a vegan friendly dessert, as well as dairy-free cheese, The Herb Garden is our top pick for pizzas in the Toon.
