There’s no shortage of things to do for kids in the North East, but finding something different can sometimes be quite difficult. We were recently invited to Big Fish Little Fish in Middlesbrough for a Family Rave.
I might dance wildly in private but I haven’t been to a rave since I was 19. Trying to explain what a rave is to two under 6’s was also interesting. “Imagine dancing in the dark, with lots of flashing lights to music that will deafen you… with a space theme!”. I’m not sure I was selling it very well but when we arrived it wasn’t far off.
The children love a good dance and as soon as they could hear the music pumping down the corridor they started throwing some dance moves they’d clearly learned from Dad. The event had an Intergalactic Planetary theme, enabling me as the parent to be responsibly irresponsible whilst I was there.
With the famous ‘Not just a pretty face paint’ in attendance, as well as crafts, games, play areas and the special guest DJ, there was more than enough to keep the children entertained. We had glow sticks wrapped around our wrists
Glow sticks at the ready, we were straight up on the dance floor the moment we arrived and busted a few moves before having a good look around at what was available. Cue the 4 year old endlessly running around in circles and picking anything up that moved to dance with.
From there we moved to the soft play area where I left the kids to it. I’m not sure it’s advisable for a 34 year old built male to be trying to fit through a children’s crawling tube. I’d have definitely gotten stuck! The crafts tables were packed with little seating available so I made sure we’d go there later as there was more crafty type bits and bobs than I’ve ever seen before.
I convinced the girls that we’d go and see the ‘face paint lady’ and they patiently waited in the queue whilst the children in front took their turn. For every child that walked away with their face painted, the girls became more and more excited to have theirs made up like a unicorn. It was easy to see why ‘Not just a pretty face paint‘ is so famous, the quality was incredible and the girls loved it.
The girls left exhausted but thoroughly enjoyed their time at Big Fish Little Fish and no doubt we’ll find our way back there soon enough. I better get practising some more moves.
