Recently myself and the Teen were at a loose end in Jesmond and fancied a spot of tea and cake. I am happy to report I was able to visit Cake Stories, somewhere we’d both loved in the past, as I discovered they have vegan cake options.
Last time I popped along back in 2015 was before my veganism and not long after this quaint little cafe opened on Brentwood Avenue. Not much has changed, my change in diet aside, and there’s a comforting homely feel about the place. We were there early evening and decided to have something savoury before we hit the cakes, and the Teen ordered a Ham & Cheese Toastie. He also chose a calorie-laden milkshake to wash it down. Rather ironic considering he’d just been to the gym!
The animal product free dishes included a Mediterranean platter and soup.
While regular readers will know I’m always a bit saddened that falafel and hummus seem like the default options for vegans, I was happy to give it a try. I’d have preferred a bit more bread and fewer crudites, especially as the hummus didn’t seem to last. It was a filling meal and I felt very virtuous while I sipped on my Blossoming Tea.
Of course, it was all undone by the Peanut Butter Blondie I had for dessert, but life’s all about balance!
Not being a big drinker means I find places to while away a few hours catching up with friends limited. Somewhere like Cake Stories is perfect, especially as they are open late. Rather than squeezing into a packed bar and struggling to grab a table, pouring a brew and tucking into cake freshly made in their own cakery.
We decided to take a slab of cake home for Gavin and he was very impressed with how chocolatey and delicious it was. We’ll definitely not be leaving it so long in future to return.
Thanks for reading,
