Ready for a vegan doughnut shop in Newcastle? I certainly was. I’ve participated in many a road trip for vegan doughnuts. Some of the best I’ve encountered are at Considerit in Edinburgh and Temple Coffee in Leeds. Now we have Glazed on our doorstep!

I’ve visited Proven Goods a few times recently and was disappointed to find no vegan doughnuts for sale. I was told that they are expanding the kitchen to offer more options but that was a bummer for someone who loves these sugary treats. They sell a great vegan cookie, but it isn’t quite the same. Thankfully Glazed opened in Heaton over a week ago and have definitely filled a gap in the market.

The range sold is 100% vegan but, much like Considerit, they haven’t screamed it all over the store. I much prefer this approach, especially as everyone can eat vegan food whereas the alternative is a different story. With a seating area out back, you can eat in or take away. As it wasn’t a particularly nice day, we choose to sit and savour the moment with some hot drinks.

Each day the counter will be stocked with different varieties. I chose the Biscoff option while my friend tried Green Matcha and Goji Berries. The base is a good consistency; not too dense but robust enough to cope with their sugary glaze. It was £11 for the two of us to enjoy a calorie laden breakfast there.

I’m happy to welcome Newcastle’s first plant based doughnut shop and wish the team every success. I’m hearing that they sell out pretty quick, so it’s best to get down there early doors if you want the pick of the bunch. They also have a gluten free option (billed as low gluten for cross contamination purposes) but it worth checking on their Facebook page for more information.
