There are some food establishments that seem ‘behind the times’ when it comes to embracing the plant-based community. The likes of Costa seem to be showing some contrition by introducing a host of vegan options recently, albeit later in the day than early adopters like Zizzi.
Another latecomer to the power of the Green Pound is Greggs. Historically there was only one all-year round product you could purchase from the ubiquitous bakery chain which was the Belgian Bun.
At Christmas you will also find their Sweet Mince Pies are SFV, too.
It just felt strange that the likes of Pret and even Boots could cobble together a sandwich or 3 for us vegans without much of a fuss, but Greggs seemed almost resistant to adopting healthier alternatives to their meat and dairy laden savoury options. Ironic, considering one of the reasons cited for Greggs temporarily changing the recipe for their Belgian Buns to include egg (making it unsuitable in certain areas of the country) was to make it more ‘nutritious’.
I was surprised to learn that the chain were adding two new items in time for summer for vegans. The Mexican Bean Wrap can be found in their fridges alongside Carrot Sticks with Hummus. I think this snack option is a bit disappointing as everyone thinks as vegans all we eat is hummus!
Both are labelled vegan too, so there’s no second guessing or ‘accidentally vegan’ stuff going on here.
As someone who isn’t keen on beans I couldn’t fairly test this wrap out so it was left in the hands of Gavin to have one as a speedy lunch.
The squished appearance is something that Greggs themselves have apologised for. In the stores I’ve seen it in it has always looked like this, which I think is disappointing. We want vegan food to look appealing to hopefully tempt non-vegans to give it a try. The amount of guacamole used in the assembly affects how well the contents holds together.
Gavin said he felt the filling was quite spicy, so the guac was definitely needed. The beans had a smoky taste and it was a light lunch option, especially as part of the £3 meal deal offer. While we might not be its biggest fan we have seen others on social media raving about it. We’d have preferred a vegan sausage roll or pasty instead, and hopefully they are working on this. If Pound Bakery can offer one I don’t see why a brand as large as Greggs can’t!
