Kimchi Planet were often recommended to me by the lovely folks of Vegano. Both regulars of Newcastle Quayside Market, I tended to gravitate more towards their plant-based junk food rather than sampling something new and unknown. I’ll admit it, I was wary. Korean food is not something I’m overly familiar with but after hearing that Kimchi had opened a bricks and mortar establishment we popped along to pop our cherry, so to speak.
Located off the beaten track in Shieldfield, Kimchi have a menu that is incredibly vegan friendly. I was actually taken aback at the fact we could almost eat the whole menu at a restaurant which doesn’t tout itself as veggie. Gavin and I decided to try a bit of everything… for the purpose of blogging about it all, of course!
We ordered Kimbap, Fried Veggie Dumplings, Kimchi Pancake and Vegan Beef Bulgogi. Gavin is a huge fan of Gyoza and thankfully for him they arrived first. They were as good, if not better, than any other he’s had in the past. The Kimchi Pancake arrived within seconds of the Dumplings. I wasn’t sure whether I would like it but am happy to report it was my favourite dish of the day.
The Bulgogi followed, made with the vegan ‘meat’, rice, and an assortment of vegetables. Again, the rice bowl was tasty and even Dinky even joining in on the sharing of lunch. Other meat subs we’ve tried in the past have been bland and chewy but the version used by Kimchi was surprisingly good.
Last to land was the Kimbap. It was beautifully presented in a metal tin and featured 10 pieces for just £5. Filled with creamy avocado and crunchy veg this could have easily been a lunch in itself. Good job we chose to share!
Both Gavin and I like to be subjective about the food as we try to be to give people a well rounded view of what to expect. Whether meals are comped (which we always state is the case, something not all bloggers do) or are paid for with our own hard earn, you get the honest picture of what we’ve experienced. The only thing we could think of with Kimchi Planet was that the rice bowl could have had a little more chilli used. It may be a preference thing but Gavin likes his food fiery!
We’d highly recommend giving Kimchi Planet a visit and I’m only disappointed I didn’t give them a try sooner. It is a real hidden gem near the Toon and excellent value. You can find out more about location, opening times, etc. here.
