I don’t think anyone can resist the lure of a pancake at the best of times, so Pancake Day (5th March) isn’t really that big a deal for me these days. Of course, it has its religious significance, but from a foodie perspective I don’t get excited as I did as a child about the prospect of pancakes for savoury and sweet on this particular day.
For those who are less cynical about the supermarkets jumping on the bandwagon to sell more lemons and jars of Nutella than any other day of the year, I have a fair few places in and around Newcastle and recipes for you to try.
If, like me, you’re at work and won’t have the opportunity to get out for pancakes, these simple recipes for fluffy American-style and crepes will keep you stocked up. You can top with whatever you like. We quite like the new Vego chocolate spread, or you could always layer with Biscoff and crumble the biscuits over the top.
Out and About
For those lucky enough to be able to go out for a leisurely brunch on Pancake Day there are many places that will serve up vegan pancakes for you. Check out a list of places here, or the restaurants and cafes below are offering a special menu on the day to gorge on.
