Vegan Tuna by Loma in Morrisons

Vegan Recipes

26 May
Loma Tuno

When we heard about a vegan tuna coming in to Morrisons we were intrigued. Before becoming vegan I wasn’t a fan of tuna to start with, but could this vegan version change my mind?

It took a little while to find, we’ve got different sized Morrison stores near to us and we had to travel to the largest one to find it on the shelves. Following on from Sainsbury’s decision to stock Naturli in the meat aisle, Tuno by Loma Linda was going to be stocked amongst the tinned tuna. There were various types to choose from but to dip my toe in I thought Tuno & Mayo would be the best option.

On the face of it, against the standard tuna, it seems to be healthier. (Lumo on the right)

We’d not read any reviews before trying it ourselves and looked forward to opening the tin to see what it was like.

Loma Tuno & Mayo

One way to describe the appearance would be cat food, or maybe it should only be “What the hell is that?!” It’s clearly subjective but they were our initial thoughts. We gave it a sniff test and I wish we hadn’t. We gave it a poke around with a fork and gasped at the texture.

None the less, we all gave it a try. We thought using it in the exact same way we would tuna would give us the best first impression. As the Teen is a huge tuna fan we were really keen to see what he thought.

Tuno & Mayo Wrap

I can’t even begin to explain the smell, but it was nothing like tuna. It didn’t look appetising but we had to give it a try for all of the folks reading the blog.

Tuno & Mayo

I took one for the team. I took two bites and couldn’t take anymore. I was done. It was hideous.

We then read the reviews and it would seem that a lot of other people who have tried it thought the same. The texture is unlike anything we had imagined it being, and the taste wasn’t something I’d try twice. The base of the fish substitute is soya, for those who have additional dietary requirements. The Teen was especially damning. It didn’t taste fishy at all which, to be honest, is what you’d want from a tuna substitute.

It’s a shame but, for us at least, we won’t be buying Loma Linda’s Tuno again. It retails for £1.30 exclusively at Morrisons if you still fancy giving it a try. If we’ve put you off then you can always try our recipe for vegan tuna here. Linda McCartney’s Vegetarian Chicken replicates the flaky texture of tuna and the nori its fishy flavour.

Thanks for reading,

Pip x

I’m not Vegan or vegetarian for that matter, but thought I’d try this in my packup for a change, it is without a doubt the most unappetizing unappealing thing I’ve seen or tasted.
The texture in your mouth is awful , within half an hour of eating half a sandwich , my sight went blurred ?, whether a coincidence I dont know but I’ve never suffered anything like it before or since ?.
